  1. General Hardware Definitions

  3. Note: In this category, with a few exceptions, all items are reported whether or
  4.            not they are applicable to  your configuration.  Items marked ΓÇ£NAΓÇ¥ are
  5.            either not available on your machine or do not apply given current settings.

  7.            [Text] = Item only exists under given circumstance

  10. ΓÇó Machine = Type of macintosh.  The (ID=??) is the actual ID number assigned to
  11.                 the machine by Apple.  It attempts to differentiate between different
  12.                 models on a hardware level, e.g. the Classic II and the Performa 200
  13.                 have identical numbers because their hardware is identical.  This
  14.                 is somewhat inconsistent in the case of the LC and LC II where they
  15.                 have identical numbers but a MC68020 and MC68030 processor               
  16.                 respectively.  Use this name and number to report Nubus/PDS reporting
  17.                 problems to us.
  18.    Γùè Total Hours in Use = Number of hours which the Mac has been on since it 
  19.                 was manufactured
  20.    Γùè Date Manufactured = Date of manufacture

  60.    Γùè Virtual Memory is In Use = Virtual Memory is located on the hard disk

  62.       + Logical Page Size = Number of bytes exchanged between RAM 
  63.                and disk at one time
  64.    Γùè Virtual + RAM Memory Size = Total number of bytes of memory 
  65.                available to system and processes
  66.    Γùè System :
  67.       + Highest Usable RAM Address = Highest RAM address available to
  68.                 applications
  69.       + High RAM Used by System = RAM allocated to video and sound buffers,
  70.                 and reserved by INITs, etc. at startup
  71.       + Low RAM Used by System = RAM allocated to vectors, global variables, 
  72.                 and dispatch tables
  73.       + Memory Used by Finder = RAM occupied by the Finder
  74.       + Memory Used by System Heap = RAM allocated to the system heap.  
  75.                 This is not only used by the system as applications can also allocate
  76.                 space in the system heap.  This includes the space taken by the Disk 
  77.                 Cache, if any
  78.          - Memory Used by Disk Cache = RAM used by the Disk Cache set in the
  79.                 Memory (Sys 7) or General (Sys 6) control panel.  In the Sys 6 Control 
  80.                 Panel, the ΓÇ£OffΓÇ¥ button does not work, so the Cache is always 32K min
  81.       + Total System Related Memory = Total Memory used by system.  For
  82.                 System 7, this value should approximate the value for the System found
  83.                 in the ΓÇ£About This MacintoshΓÇ¥  dialog for the System.  For System 6,
  84.                 the comparable comparison would add the Finder value in the dialog to
  85.                 the System. 
  86.       + System Heap Free Space = Free Space currently available in System 
  87.                Heap.  Corresponds to the white space in the bar next to System in
  88.                ΓÇ£About this MacintoshΓÇ¥
  89.    Γùè CPU can check Parity = Is machine equipped for Parity RAM?  This 
  90.               type of RAM is used when detection of any RAM anomaly is critical.  
  91.               This is a special order capability for computers used in sensitive
  92.               applications
  93.       + Parity checking is enabled = Is parity checking enabled? {Previous Yes}
  94. ΓÇó Miscellaneous Hardware Attributes :
  95.    Γùè Has VIA1 = Does the machine have a VIA1 (Versatile Interface Adapter)? 
  96.                This VIA provides support for the ADB, floppy drives, real-time chip,
  97.                modem port, etc.
  98.    Γùè Has VIA2 = Does the machine have a VIA2?  This chip was added in machines
  99.                starting with the Mac II. This VIA provides support for Nubus 
  100.                interrupts, Sound Chip interrupts, etc.  If this is ΓÇ£NoΓÇ¥ on newer 
  101.                machines, it means that these functions are handled by other newer
  102.                chips, such as an RBV or OSS
  103.    Γùè Has RBV = Does this machine have RBV (Ram Based Video) built-in?
  104.    Γùè Has VISA RBV = Does this machine have VISA RBV built-in?
  105.    Γùè Has DAFB = Does this machine have DAFB video built-in?
  106.    Γùè Has VDAC = Does this machine have VDAC┬á(Video D/A and CLUT) built-in?
  107.    Γùè Has ASC = Does this machine have an ASC (Apple Sound Chip)?  This chip
  108.                provides sound for the internal speaker
  109.    Γùè Has RSB = Does this machine have RSB (Ram Based Sound) buffer?
  110.    Γùè Has OSS = Does this machine have an OSS (Operating System Support chip)?
  111.    Γùè Has SCC IOP = Does the machine have an SCC (Serial Communications
  112.                Controller) IOP (I/O Processor)?  The SCC controls the serial phone
  113.                and printer ports and is available on all machines.  The IOP feature 
  114.                applies to machines which use an IOP to buffer the SCC function  {IIfx,
  115.                Quadra}
  116.        + Has SCC Direct Access On = Is the IOP set to a mode to allow
  117.                direct access to the SCC?  This is necessary for compatibility with some
  118.                serial devices. {Previous Yes}
  119.    Γùè Has IWM/SWIM = Is the floppy drive chip the original IWM/SWIM ([Super]
  120.                Woz Integrated Machine)?  This chip is named after Steve Wozniak,

  175.       + ROM is 32 Bit Clean = Yes/No
  176.    Γùè ROM Sub-Version = Used to distinguish minor changes to the basic ROM

  178.    Γùè ROM Checksum = Sometimes used to identify ROM version in older machines
  179.    Γùè ROM Start = Address indicating the beginning of ROM.  This address can be 
  180.                compared against the address returned in the Traps listings to determine
  181.                if a trap has been patched
